In loving tribute to an icon of democracy and national hero of the Republic of the Philippines, Maria Corazon “Cory” C. Aquino (1933-2009)

WIP CAPS would like to take this opportunity to honor and pay tribute to the life of Corazon “Cory” C. Aquino, the ex-President of the Philippines. Cory died on August 1, 2009 due to complications from colon cancer.

Cory Aquino is a worldwide icon of freedom and democracy. In 1986, she helped lead and inspire the “People Power Movement”, a bloodless revolution that toppled the autocratic regime of Ferdinand Marcos and restored democracy and the rule of law to the Philippines. After Marcos fled the Philippines, Cory became the 11th President of the Republic of the Philippines, and the first female president in Asia.Cory was married to Senator Benigno Aquino, Jr., a national hero who was an outspoken critic and political opponent of Ferdinand Marcos. When Senator Aquino was assassinated in 1983, Cory Aquino transformed herself from a humble housewife to a revolutionary leader who inspired the Filipino nation into uniting as one to end the 20-year Marcos dictatorship.

For her accomplishments as an advocate of democracy, peace, human rights, and women empowerment, Cory Aquino was honored with Time Magazine’s Woman of the Year for 1986, runner-up to the 1986 Nobel Peace Prize, Eleanor Roosevelt’s 1986 Human Rights Award, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Nonviolent Peace Prize. In 2006 Cory was voted by Time Magazine as one of 65 Asian Heroes.

Our condolences go out to Cory Aquino’s family.  In loving memory, WIP will continue to promote and advocate what Cory stood and fought for.

“Looming from the battle her courage will never fade.

Amidst the hardships she has remained

Undaunted and unafraid

She is calm and composed, She is God’s lovely maid.”

- Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, Jr. (loving husband, patriot, and national hero)

Rest In Peace Tita Cory.
